In 2013, Korean artist Do Ho Suh’s installation Home Within Home Within Home Within Home Within Home was exhibited for the first time as an inaugural show for Seoul’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. For the project, Imagebakery produced a video documentary of the artist’s giant installation - a silk replica of a life-size (12 meters by 15 meters) three-story house that the artist had lived when he first moved to the United States to study art. The shooting of the installation, however, involved a complicated process mainly due to the giant scale of the sculpture. Because the scale was so big, the relative space to capture within the frame was limited, which became a creative barrier in the film. Given such condition and in order to maximize the team’s creative options as well as including as many ideas for the film, the company underwent a 3D simulation test in the computer lab for nearly two weeks.
The team’s priority in the simulation test was to put aside its technical barriers in filming the installation such as its shooting equipment, and focus on the ideas. Later, the team figured out technical solutions to produce images from the simulation test into real life by gathering rare shooting equipment. Using digital simulation, the team also produced an identical model of Seoul Box and the museum site complete with the direction of camera movements and visitor circulation. This helped to enhance the accuracy of communication with the artist who lived overseas as well as providing a perfect guide to the museum staff.
국립현대미술관에서는 지난 2013년 서울관의 역사적인 개관을 기념하는 첫 번째 프로젝트로 서도호 작가의 집 속의 집 속의 집 속의 집 속의 집이 전시되었다. 이미지베이커리는 이 대형 설치 작품을 보여주는 영상을 제작하였다. 미국 유학시절 서도호 작가가 처음 거주했던 3층 주택을 높이 12m, 너비 15m의 실물 크기로 재현한 이 작품은 그 규모 만큼이나 촬영을 하는 데에 있어도 결코 쉽지 않은 작업이었다. 작품의 크기가 매우 크기 때문에 상대적으로 촬영할 수 있는 공간은 매우 적었다.
그래서 환경에 맞춰 촬영 계획을 구상하는 것은 큰 제약 요소가 되었다. 그래서 우리는 제한된 환경에서 아이디어를 최대한 많이 펼칠 수 있도록 본 촬영에 앞서 컴퓨터로 약 2주간 3D Pre-visualization 을 우선 진행하였다. 3D 시뮬레이션하며 가장 우선시했던 부분은 아이디어의 제한을 두지 않기 위해 촬영 장비의 한계를 고려하지 않았다. 그렇게 디지털로 완성된 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과를 아날로그 촬영 장비로 구현하기 위해 지금껏 시도되지 않았던 여러 장비의 조합을 통해 실현하였다. 특히 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 이용해 작품이 전시된 국립현대미술관 서울관의 서울박스를 완벽하게 모델링하고 카메라의 움직임과 화각, 등장 인물들의 동선까지도 세부적으로 담아내어 서도호 작가와 원격으로 정확한 의사소통을 할 수 있었고 현장 스탭들에게는 완벽한 가이드가 될 수 있었다.
